Who's riding and who's driving?  CoG doesn't have a driver's license so I know he's riding.

In honor of this being a Ryder Cup year, we want to do a special format team event in September.

It will be a special buy-in, with it's own winnings.  Minimun 2-man teams and minimun 36 holes played (each).  It will also be open to our "social members" as well.

The thought on format is this..

  • Individual Stroke Play - team score is combined score of individuals net target score
    (same as standard SFGT scoring).
  • Virtual Four Ball - team score using the individual best net score amongst the team.
(We'll align scores to hole handicaps, so we'll take the best net score for the #1 handicap hole, the # 2 handicap hole, etc. regardless of what actual hole it may be.  To normalize course handicaps, we'll calculate a target strokes over par based on the course you play.  Basically, Course Handicap + Par - Course Ratingover/under = target strokes over par.)

Depending on the interest and number of participants, we'll break into 2 or more flights and do a "blind draw" to form teams with a "high" and a "low" handicapper together.  All teams will then compete on the same leaderboard.

You will be allowed to "double book" a round against both a standard SFGT tournament and a Cart Rider score.  However, you cannot use the same round to count for both Cart Rider formats.

Thoughts, feedback?  How much "buy in"?

Explanation and example of Virtual Four Ball (aka 2-Man Best Ball)

refer to:

http://sfgt2010.webs.com/Cart Rider Bestball.pdf

Explanation:

  1. Key thing to remember, in this format your team's score is the better of your two NET scores on each hole.  So, if you blow up on a hole you hope your partner at least has you covered with a net par.
  2. Since each course is different, we'll compare scores which have the same hole handicap.  So, the best net score between you both on the 1st hardest hole.  Then the best net score between you both on the 2nd hardest hole.  Really, the normal hole number in this case won't matter.  If you were playing the same course, this would not be necessary.
  3. Once your stroke allowance is determined, they are applied starting with the hardest hole on the course.  Then the next, and so on, until they are all allocated.  If you have an allowance higher than 18, that means on some holes you will receive 2 strokes.  In this example, AZBlue had a stroke allowance of 6 so he received a stroke on each of the 6 hardest holes.  Likewise, dysangel had an allowance of 36 so he received 2 strokes on each hole (18 x 2 = 36).
  4. Notice that virtually any 18 hole course can be used, however, I must have the hole handicap information.

Lastly, too much info?  Too much crazy golf math?  No problem, just go play and let us do the math...like magic.

I've been thinking about pairings.  It will work best to break into 4 groups, based on handicaps.  Group A being the low handicappers and Group D the high.  B and C, in between...yeah, ok that was obvious I guess.  We'll try to pair someone from group A with group C.  Group B with Group D.

Course, that will all be dependent on how many players we get.  On that note, I sent out my paypal address again.  $5 minimun entry.  Some folks wanted to through in extra towards trophies, so feel free but you are not obligated.  The amount of participation and entry fees collect will determine how cool of a trophy we can get.  100% of entry fees will go towards the trophies, winner take all.  There is no second plance and no cash payout.

Enter early, as if we are an odd number the last entrant will be dropped from the tournament and refunded.  Teams will be drawn on or about August 30th.  Play will occur September 1st through September 30th.

I need to do another count...but I think we are up to 15-16. I say it's enough to play, even if we can't do a very big "cup". I'm going to slide the start by about a week. standby, will work on teams this week/weekend and we'll start next week.

ONE more day fellows ..... Let's get this cup rolling ......

cogolfer1 August 28, 2010
C'mon guys why is no one willing to pay FIVE DOLLARS to pay in a tournament that's the closest you'll ever get to Ryder Cup magnitude.

Wink August 28, 2010
Hey guys, we're up to 14. Thats on the edge of viability but not much of a "trophy". We'll give it a few more days

Chazmo August 27, 2010
C'mon Stracka Tour we need more players for the tournament pony up!!!!

I think Diamond Dave is the only one here with a negative handicap, so this doesn't apply to most of us, Wink, but for him, shouldn't his stroke allowance be on the EASIEST holes? Say his course handicap is +3, would it be a plus 1 on holes 16, 17, and 18 per the hole handicap, system?

Thanks for the sample scorecards... well illustrated and easily understood... heading to Paypal right now, Winky! :-)
